re: Blackwing Descent - Chimaeron

Chimaeron

Chimaeron is one of the bosses in Blackwing Descent which must be defeated in order to unlock the Nefarian encounter. He is an experimental hydra created by Lord Nefarius, set to guard a prisoner named Finkle. As your raid approaches Chimaeron’s room, you’ll notice he has fallen asleep on the job and will not attack unless a player attacks him first. This allows you to talk to Finkle in the cage at the rear of the room, who will then activate a Bile-O-Tron to help your raid. Without the Bile-O-Tron spreading Finkle’s Mixture on the raid, Chimaeron’s Massacre attack will 1-shot everyone, so be sure to activate it before attempting the encounter. Once the Bile-O-Tron is active, your raid has ~15 seconds to get into positions before Chimaeron wakes up (he can still be woken by simply attacking, as well).

Finkle’s Mixture – (10/25 player version) Damage taken while above 10k HP cannot reduce your health below 1 HP. While this buff is active on the raid, raid healers should not waste mana topping off non-tank players; simply assure that anyone who takes damage is healed immediately to above 10k health. If your raid is spread out properly, only a few players other than the tanks will take damage at a time.

Composition

10 player:

2 tanks – You will need two traditional tanks; one to tank Chimaeron for the majority of the encounter, and a second to taunt then soak each Double Attack.

2-3 healers – You will need at least one healer for the active tank and 1 for the raid, and possibly a second tank healer. As is always the case in 10 player raiding, the healers will need to heal across assignments much more often than is the case in 25 player raids.

5-6 DPS – Any combination of ranged/melee DPS is fine. There are no special mechanics such interrupts etc to consider; simply bring your best output raiders as the main challenge of this encounter is meeting the DPS check during Phase 2. As is often the case in 10 player raiding, stacking your DPS toward either the physical or magical buff set will help your chances of success at lower gear levels.

Boss Info and Abilities

Chimaeron
90.6 million HP in 25 player/25.9 million HP in 10 player

Phase One – 100% to 20%
Chimaeron will utilize the abilities listed below. Note that he has no cleave/breath/tail swipe abilities that would limit positioning. Take advantage of this fact by tanking him in the center of his room so that ranged DPS and healers can utilize the entire space to spread out, especially in the 25 player version where space is more limiting. Make sure that healers are allowed more centralized spots so that they can keep everyone in range of heals.

Break – (10/25 player version) Chimaeron attacks the active tank, applying a 1 minute debuff that increases physical damage taken by 25% and reduces healing done by 15%. This buff can stack up to 4, and new stacks reset the duration.

Double Attack – (10/25 player version) This is a buff that periodically appears on Chimaeron, indicating that he will strike twice on his next attack. Whenever this buff shows up, the soaker tank should immediately taunt, because the regular tank will have stacks of Break and almost certainly would not survive a double melee swing. Tank healers should also watch for this buff, so that they can swap targets properly and assure that the new tank doesn’t die.

Caustic Slime – (10 player version)(25 player version) Chimaeron will use this ability quite frequently, targeting random players to be hit with a huge amount of nature damage, split between that player and anyone within 6 yards of them. As long as the Bile-O-Tron is active, the player will only be taken to 1 HP instead of killed. Because the Caustic Slime also briefly reduces chance to hit for all players it strikes, the raid cannot just stack up to spread the damage all the time; it would hamper DPS too much.

Massacre – (10/25 player version) This is a 4 second cast that will deal so much damage to everyone in the raid that they didn’t even bother to put an actual number on the tool tip. As long as everyone is above 10k HP and the Bile-O-Tron is active, it will reduce everyone to 1 HP instead of wiping the raid. This attack also has a chance to knock the Bile-O-Tron offline. If that happens, everyone in the raid should immediately collapse into a single pile, and healers should heal everyone back up as fast as possible so that incoming Caustic Slime casts don’t kill people. The Bile-O-Tron will reactivate after 30 seconds, allowing everyone to spread back out.

Feud – (10/25 player version) Any time a Massacre deactivates the Bile-O-Tron, Chimaeron’s heads will begin to fight each other. The Feud lasts until the Bile-O-Tron reactivates. While it is happening, the boss is unable to perform Break or Double Attack, or melee swing. Tank healers should take advantage of this to help the entire raid survive until the Bile-O-Tron reactivates, because Chimaeron will still cast Caustic Slime during the Feud.

Phase Two – 20% to 0%
Once damaged down to 20%, Chimaeron will no longer cast Massacre, Caustic Slime, or Break. He will still use Double Attack, and will also gain a new buff:

Mortality – This buff makes Chimaeron take 10% more damage but immunes him to taunts(10/25 player version). It also reduces all healing done to players by 99%(10/25 player version). However, shielding effects and damage reduction cooldowns will continue to work during this phase, so use any of those available to keep the tanks alive as long as possible.

Strategy

25 player or 10 player:

Buff up and get ready in the doorway to the room. After buffing up, have everyone work out where they will each stand by taking up positions around the boss; everyone should be at least 7 yards from each other. Once everyone is ready, someone should talk to Finkle in the cage at the back of the room to activate the Bile-O-Tron. After the Bile-O-Tron is active, whichever tank will be handling Chimaeron first can hit the boss and wake him up.

DPS should wait for the tank to have a solid threat lead on the boss before starting in on damage. Raid healers should be watching for the first Caustic Slimes to hit, healing anyone struck to back above 10k HP (if the soaker tank is hit, heal that person to full ASAP rather than just above 10k, because he/she may need to taunt the boss soon after being struck with slime). Tank healers should prepare for heavy damage on the active tank as stacks of Break build up, and be ready to swap to the soaker tank when he/she taunts. The soaker tank should DPS the boss, while watching vigilantly for the Double Attack buff to appear, taunting immediately when it does.

Every time Massacre hits, everyone in the raid needs to be watching to see if the Bile-O-Tron is deactivated by the strike, and collapse immediately if/when it happens. If anyone is slow to group up and happens to be targeted by Caustic Slime, they will be 1-shot. Damage on the boss will slow down while the raid is piled up, because of the –hit debuff left by each Caustic Slime strike. Any DPS with healing abilities might consider helping healers out while debuffed, to make sure everyone survives and the healers don’t run out of mana. Once the Bile-O-Tron reactivates, everyone should immediately spread back to their previous locations and resume normal DPS/healing duties.

This cycle continues until Chimaeron is brought down to 20% HP. At that point, the fight will transition into Phase 2. Once this phase starts, everyone in the raid, including the healers, should do as much damage to Chimaeron as they can, as quickly as possible. The phase is basically a race, to see if your raid can kill Chimaeron before he kills all of you.

Side note: I'm going to be posting the boss fights on the forums so those of you who had to sit or get cycled in can read up on the fight before hand or if you are just simply curious. Please ask any questions you may have about the fight!
