DPS: Raids, Gear, and Hit Rating

There have been questions around gear for raiding so I want to put a quick post together. This is for DPS only so healing and tanking gtfo. There is a huge gap in dps on raids so please make sure you are hit capped whether through reforging or gemming which is dependent on your class. For most it is important stat to cap for early raiding. It eliminates misses which is a huge dps loss.

I am just summarizing the articles from http://elitistjerks.com and I strongly recommend you read the entire spec thread for Cataclysm for your class.

Each section will be broken down as follows:

Class

Specs

Hit Cap

Stat Priority (Hit being the priority until capped for most)

Rotation

I apologize for the wall of text; I will clean it up later. If I screwed something up let me know.

Rotation

For this spec your rotation is less of a set order and more about watching procs and timers. Excluding the very beginning of the fight, you will simply spam fireball over and over, keeping Living Bomb up on all targets you want it up on, using Hot Streak procs as available and keeping Flame Orb on cooldown. Use the above addons to keep track of the scorch/LB duration and for when HS procs.

If LB is about to expire and Hot Streak procs, you want to choose which to cast first based on if you think your Hot Streak will be overridden during the Global Cooldown (GCD) used to cast LB. This can only happen if your previous ability crit and the last fireball or scorch you cast before casting LB crits as well, so if I see crits happening I will use the HS first otherwise if I feel I'm safe from losing a proc, I will cast LB first (to increase uptime).

At the beginning of a boss or when you are switching to an add/different mob cast LB and then scorch (and then Flame Orb if off CD) to get into position and then follow the normal rotation.

For trash, use the single target rotation, keeping LB up on at least three targets, or follow the AoE rotation if enough mobs are present.

Rotation
Arcane has a fairly straightforward, but all together different rotation from Frost or Fire, and focuses more on your mana pool more than on procs or debuffs.

The mechanic which is gives Arcane such an interesting "rotation" has to do with Arcane Blast, the new mastery and Mage Armor. When Abl is cast a debuff is placed on the player which can stack four times, the debuff increases Abl's damage substantially but increases it's mana cost even more (a lot more); the mastery increases your damage done relative to your current mana percent; Mage Armor simply helps you regen a lot of mana continuously. With their powers combined...

The possible rotation's and there ups and downs are as follows:
Abl x1 -> AM: Never casting Abl at any stacks, clearing it after the first cast; you will gain mana following this rotation due to Mage Armor; lowest dps.

Abl x(2 or 3) -> AM: A 'normal' rotation, alternating between the two (in any amount necessary) to stay at a constant amount of mana, namely above 90%, where your mastery has the greatest effect.

Evocation has a cooldown of two minutes, and as such you basically get a free 60% mana every two minutes. About 10 to 20 (or more) seconds before evocation comes off CD you want to enter into your highest DPS and greatest mana cost rotation, pure Arcane Blast spam, so that you reach 30 to 35% mana right as Evo comes off CD and you can evo back to full mastery bonus and begin the mana neutral (MN) cycle once more.

From here on is my own thoughts and I hope for verification/discussion to come to an at least slightly definitive answer. At the beginning of the fight, you will start in a MN rotation because the tank doesn't have the threat for you to lay into the mob, but you will presumably want to go into Abl spam as soon as possible as it's your highest DPS rotation, where you then Evocate back up and use a MN rotation until the CD comes up once more. In other words you want to Abl spam as soon as possible and get the Evo CD running as quickly as you can (without wasting it).

Hit Cap - Str is king. Hit and expertise cap via reforging (not gems).

961

Stat Priority

Str > Hit > AP > Exp > Crit > Haste > Mastery

Rotation

The Ret paladin "rotation" shares something with Wrath - it is priority based. The priority for single-target is as follows: Inq > HoW > Exo > TV > CS > J > HW > Cons

It is possible we will modify this further to: Inq > HoW > Exo > 3 HP TV > CS > HoL TV at 1 or 2 HP > J > HW > Cons. This may have less delays in CS, thus more total CS in a fight. The greater CS usage would provide additional HP, thus additional TV. Trading these CS and TV for fillers should be a DPS gain. However, if some HoL are lost due to delays from higher priority attacks, it could be a net DPS loss. Further modeling is necessary before this determination can be made.

Inq increases Holy Damage when it is up. Initial modeling shows refresh up to 6 seconds before it ends. Averaging a gain of 3 HP within 8 seconds should be fairly typical. Thus if you use a TV right at 6 seconds, you typically can refresh no later than 2 seconds after Inq expires.

In melee range:
Never, ever cast Exo - only use Exo when it is instant from an AoW proc. If AoW has not procced, then Exo has a cast time and mana cost. Remember during cast you stop and reset all autoattacks.

If out of melee range (phase transition/funny-business):
Judge if you can. Without AoW Exo drops below Judge. If Judge is on CD, spam cast Exo.

Against Undead or Demons:
Inq > Exo > HoW > TV > CS > J > HW > Cons

The fact that Exorcism auto-crits when used on Undead or Demons and its faster scaling (lesser coefficient modified by large +% bonus, effectively granting higher overall coefficient) causes it to pull ahead of HoW.

Hit Cap - Int is king. Spell Hit via reforging (not gems).

Spell Hit cap 1742

Stat Priority

Int > Hit > SP > Haste > Crit > Mastery > Spi

Rotation

Probably considered a pretty challenging DPS rotation, it seems simple, but timing is key, and makes the rotation more complex. The five main spells that shadow priests use consist of three DoTs (Vampiric Touch, Devouring Plague, and Shadow Word: Pain) and two “filler” spells (Mind Blast and Mind Flay).
With Cataclysm, the shadow priest DPS style has changed up a bit, adding in our new talents – Evangelism and Archangel – and our two new class systems – Empowered Shadows and Shadow Orbs from Mastery.

*1 - Opening Rotation:
VT -> DP -> SW:P -> MF until Shadow Orb procs -> MB

*2 – Opening Rotation when having to run in:
DP -> SW:P -> VT -> MF until an Orb procs -> MB

If you're finding yourself in a good place mana-wise throughout fights, feel free to pop Shadowfiend as a DPS CD rather than for mana return. Shadowfiend should be popped after all DOTs are up.

*1 – Same rotation as usual, DOTS up, MF as a filler, and MB when applicable. This is where we have a change. With our Mastery stat, we receive something known as Shadow Orbs which is a buff we receive that proc off of SW:P and MF and can stack up to x3. Shadow Orbs increase our Mind Blast or Mind Spike damage by a percentage depending on our Mastery rating. When you use MB with x1-3 Shadow Orbs up, you get a buff called Empowered Shadows. This is basically a static increase to our DOTS, and has a 15 second duration. As we continue on through our rotation, we need to make sure that Empowered Shadow is always up. Casting MB should only be based on two things – Refreshing Empowered Shadows or casting it with x1-3 Shadow Orbs. The damage of MB is significantly low right now, and it is only worth casting if you have x1-3 Shadow Orbs to buff its damage.

IMPORTANT! – Remember that old thing, Shadow Weaving? Do ya? Well, most experienced Shadow Priests do, and we rejoiced on its removal. Oh? What’s this? Evangelism? Well, this thing is basically like Shadow Weaving, stacking up to x5 and increasing DOT damage by 2% per stack, adding up to 10%. You can only gain Evangelism stacks through MF ticks, so it should generally always be up.

After the opening rotation, spells fall into more of a “Priority List” and they are the following:

1. Vampiric Touch
2. Devouring Plague
3. SW:D ONLY when boss is < 25% x2 (Glyph refreshes CD)
3. Mind Blast (To keep Empowered Shadows up or with x1-3 Shadow Orbs)
4. Mind Flay

Blizzard implemented a new system regarding DOTS, and that’s the fact that if you cast, for example, VT when the VT on your target still has 5 seconds on it, the duration will just refresh and you don’t lose ticks. However, perfect timing will result in better DPS and a lesser waste of mana.

Spell Hit cap 1742

Stat Priority

If you're hit capped, and/or you have excess hit or spirit, do the following:
1. If an item has hit/spirit and crit, reforge hit/spirit to Haste if you have excess hit rating, otherwise reforge crit to Haste
2. If an item has hit/spirit and haste, reforge hit/spirit to Mastery if you have excess hit rating, otherwise leave it alone
3. If an item has hit/spirit and mastery, reforge hit/spirit to Haste if you have excess hit rating, otherwise leave it alone
4. If an item has crit and haste, reforge crit to Mastery
5. If an item has crit and mastery, reforge crit to Haste
6. If an item has haste and mastery, leave it alone!

Rotation

The elemental rotation is a combination of cool down use, flame shock up times, and preventing the waste of shield charges.

Keep lightning shield up. Tis should not be an issue if you have the correct talents & glyphs.
Keep flame shock up. Lava burst is virtually worthless to cast if it doesn’t auto crit.
Use Lava Burst whenever it is off cooldown.
Cast Earth Shock. The ideal time to cast it is around 7 stacks, although it is ok to let it go up to 8 or 9. The important thing to remember is to try to avoid wasting rolling thunder procs (which generate the additional shield charges) while also minimising the number of Earth Shock casts. If you need to, cast it at 6 charges if you have a flame shock cast coming up soon, although wasting one or two shield charges won’t be as much of a dps loss as delaying either flame shock or lava burst.
Chain lightning can be used, but only in situations where there are multiple dps targets close together. It also has a higher mana cost so it won’t be practical in a sustained rotation.
Cast lightning bolt.
