Valiona and Theralion

Valiona and Theralion are a pair of Twilight Dragons, standing between your raid and further progress into the Bastion of Twilight. They fight in tandem, taking turns attacking by ground and by air. They also share a single health pool and threat table.

In order to defeat them, your raiders will need to remain aware of which is grounded or flying, and react properly to the abilities they use during either method of attack.

Composition

10 player:
1 tank – You will need a single tank to handle whichever dragon is grounded throughout the fight. The flying dragon does not need to be tanked.

2-4 healers – In this fight, even more than most other 10 player encounters, specific healing assignments are not really practical. A single healer will likely not be able to keep the tank alive due to the frequent raid movements needed, but dedicating multiple healers to the tank full time will take too much healing away from the rest of the raid. All of your healers are going to need to work together to assure that everyone stays alive. While learning this encounter, raid damage tends to be quite high, so start with 3 or even 4 healers. As your raiders get better at reacting properly to the various avoidable sources of damage, the healing strain will get lighter and you can bring extra DPS to end the fight sooner.

5-7 DPS – There are no special restrictions on what DPS you bring. The most important thing is to bring players with good situational awareness and quick reaction times. There are several abilities in this encounter that punish tunnel-visioned or meter-watching players very heavily.

Boss Info and Abilities

Valiona and Theralion
97 million HP in 25 player/ 32.2 million HP in 10 player. Shared.

Valiona grounded/Theralion flying:

Twilight Blast (Theralion) – (10/25 player version)While in the air, Theralion will target a random member of the raid and hit them with this ability every other second or so. The blast does damage to the targeted player, and also to any other players within ~8yrds of the target. Because of this ability, your raid should stay spread out as much as possible when Theralion is in the air, to minimize damage taken.

Blackout (Valiona) – (10 player version)(25 player version)Twice each time she is grounded, Valiona will target a single random raid member and apply this debuff. The entire raid needs to immediately stack with the debuffed player, before the debuff can safely be removed. When it is removed (dispelling it, healing the debuffed player for more than the debuff threshold, or waiting 15 seconds), it will cause an explosion also called Blackout. The healing threshold to remove this debuff is quite low, especially in the 10 player version, so healers should be careful.

Blackout – (10/25 player version)- This is the explosion caused by the Blackout debuff fading or being removed. It deals a massive amount of damage, split between all players within ~5 yards of the previously debuffed player. There must be at least 5-6 players splitting the damage in order for those hit to survive. Once the explosion goes off, your raid should spread back out quickly, because Theralion will still be casting frequent Twilight Blasts.

Devouring Flames (Valiona) – (10/25 player version) Also twice each time she is grounded, Valiona will stop meleeing, face a random raid member, and begin to cast this ability. The moment she does, everyone in the raid needs to start reacting. Melee range players should run through the boss so that they are behind her (including the tank). Ranged players should get behind her if they can do so within 2.5 seconds; otherwise they should run as far away from her head as they can. When the 2.5 second cast ends, Valiona will spit fire, covering the entire 180-degree arc in front of her head with purple flames for 5 seconds. The flames tick damage every second, doing less damage the further one is from her head. If you’re close to her they are deadly, but at max range they do negligible damage. While reacting to this ability, remember that Theralion will still be hitting people with Twilight Blasts; stay away from other raid members as much as you can.

Dazzling Destruction (Theralion) – (10/25 player version) Right before the two dragons swap attack modes, Theralion will use this 4 second cast ability three times in a row. Each time he starts the cast, two purplish swirling zones will appear on the ground at random player locations, indicating where the ability will hit. When cast finishes, any player in a swirly zone will take damage and be shifted into the Twilight Realm.

Twilight Shift – (10/25 player version)- This is the debuff put on players who have been shifted into the Twilight Realm. It’s just an indicator; it doesn’t do damage.

Twilight Zone – (10/25 player version)- Anyone in the Twilight Realm will take ticks of this every other second, until they either die or find one of the clickable portals that will take them back to the normal realm.

Unstable Twilight – (10/25 player version)- Inside the Twilight Realm, there are multiple little pink floating balls. If you contact one, it will hit you with this. Dodge the balls as you navigate toward a portal out.

Dazzling Destruction – (10/25 player version)- If you got put into the Twilight Realm via one of the first two casts of Dazzling Destruction, you’re at risk to be 1-shot by its subsequent casts; they will hit you for ~500k instead of ~15k. You can’t see them, so make sure your raid mates communicate to you where they are.

Theralion grounded/Valiona flying:

Twilight Meteorite (Valiona) – (10 player version)(25 player version)While in the air, Valiona will chain-cast this 6 second cast ability, targeting random players each time. As with her Blackout ability, damage from Twilight Meteorite is split between all players within ~5 yards. At least 5-6 other players need to stack on the targeted one before Valiona’s cast finishes, or those it hits will die. The targeted player will get a large purplish arrow above their head. Because of the frequency of this attack, the easiest thing to do is just to stay in piles (a melee pile and a ranged pile)the whole time Valiona is flying.

Engulfing Magic (Theralion) – (10/25 player version)Twice each time he is grounded, Theralion will target a random raid member and hit them with this 20 second debuff. It increases the player’s damage and healing by 100%, but causes all damage and healing they do to deal equivalent damage to other players within ~10 yards of them. The player hit should stop all casts/attacks and move away from everyone else quickly, then resume normal duties once at a safe distance. The debuff cannot be removed by players; it must run its full duration.

Fabulous Flames (Theralion) – (10/25 player version)Theralion will periodically use this ability to create what looks like a flaming void zone about 15 yards across, at randomly chosen player locations. He seems to prefer ranged targets over melee ones if they are available; use this to your advantage by keeping the ranged pile at a distance from Theralion so that your melee don’t get hit (a single zone takes up most of Theralion’s hit box; melee getting hit is bad). It’s an instant cast, so some damage from it is unavoidable. Everyone just needs to move quickly out of the zone to keep the damage to a minimum. Remember to move as a group since Valiona’s Twilight Meteorite will still be hitting your pile. Each fiery zone will persist for ~45 seconds.

Twilight Flames (Valiona) – (10/25 player version)Shortly before the dragons swap attack modes, Valiona will begin to use this ability. She will fly to the west end of the room, randomly choose one of three positions (north side, center, south side), and then sweep the length of the room, covering 1/3rd of it in flames crop-dusting style (remember Felmyst?). She will repeat this process from the east end, then do so again from the west for a total of 3 passes before she lands. Any players hit by the flames will take minor damage and be sent into the Twilight Realm. As your raid moves to avoid this ability, remember that Theralion will still be casting Fabulous Flames so you’ll need to stay out of the void zones as well.

Twilight Flames – (10/25 player version)- If you are shifted into the Twilight Realm by one of the first two passes of Twilight Flames, you are at risk to be 1-shot by subsequent casts; they will hit you for ~500k instead of ~15k. You can’t see them, so make sure your raid mates communicate to you where they are.

Strategy

10/25 player:
At the start of the encounter, Valiona will always stay on the ground while Theralion flies into the air. Make sure your tank is ready to pick up the correct dragon.

Valiona grounded and Theralion flying:
As the dragons are agro’d, your raid should get into positions. The tank should pick up Valion and drag her to the center of the room, while melee cluster on her sides or rear and ranged DPS/healers spread out as much as possible all the way around her. She has no tail swipe or cleave ability that would limit positioning, so spreading all the way around her allows the best chance to minimize Twilight Blast damage. Healers should be ready to start patching up those that take Twilight Blast hits right at the start of the fight, while everyone gets into position; Theralion starts casting it as soon as he’s up in the air. When the tank has a firm threat lead on Valiona, DPS can begin attacking full-force.

The first Blackout will occur ~10 seconds into combat. Have a pre-selected place where all raid players will stack when this happens, including the debuffed player. Valiona’s rear end makes a good spot, since melee DPS will already be in place and able to keep damaging the boss. The tank shouldn’t need to stack with the pile, but can do so if it looks like there won’t be enough others to spread the damage (due to deaths or just slow reaction times). Once everyone is stacked up, then either dispel the debuffed player or heal them past the debuff’s threshold. Don’t do it early or people will probably die. As soon as the debuff is removed and the explosion has gone off, everyone should quickly spread back to their initial positions.

The first Devouring Flames will happen ~20 seconds after the first Blackout. The moment Valiona spins to face someone other than the tank, everyone in the raid should start reacting. Move behind Valiona’s head if you can, otherwise get as far from her face as possible. Healers should watch for those who are slow to get out of the way, and be ready to provide them with heavy healing. Once the Devouring Flames end and Valiona swings back to facing the tank, everyone can spread all the way around her once more.

There will be a second Blackout roughly 25 seconds later, and a second Devouring Flames ~15 seconds after that. React to each the same way you did the first time they were used.

Shortly after the second Devouring Flames finishes, Theralion will begin his series of Dazzling Destruction casts. Everyone should move out of the swirling zones as they appear, and get ready for the dragons to swap places.

-If anyone is hit by one of the early Dazzling Destruction casts and shifted into the Twilight Realm, someone in the normal realm should try to tell them where subsequent zones appear so that they don’t get 1-shot. The player(s) shifted into the Twilight should look around and find one of the pink clickable portals, run to it while avoiding the floating Unstable Twilight orbs, and click it to return to the normal realm.

After he finishes all three Dazzling Destruction casts, Theralion will land while Valiona flies up into the air.

Theralion grounded and Valiona flying:
As the dragons swap places, your raid should adjust to new positions. The tank should maneuver Theralion into the same place Valiona was tanked, while melee group up into a single tight cluster on Theralion’s side or rear. All ranged DPS and healers should collapse onto a pre-determined spot that is 20 or so yards from the boss(putting a raid marker on a single ranged player and designating that person to be the collapse location can help). The idea is to have a single melee pile and a single ranged pile to counter Twilight Meteorite casts, while keeping the ranged pile far enough from Theralion that melee DPS/the tank are not impacted by Fabulous Flames zones but also leaving room further out for those debuffed with Engulfing Magic to stand and be in range of damaging the boss. Valiona will start chain casting Twilight Meteorites as soon as she is all the way up in the air, so make sure everyone knows ahead of time where to stack up, and gets into position quickly.

The first Fabulous Flames cast will go out ~ 10 seconds after Theralion lands. When it does, the ranged pile should shift as a group in a pre-planned direction (generally either clockwise or counterclockwise around Theralion, maintaining the same distance from him).

The first Engulfing Magic debuff will go out at about the same time. As soon as it does, the player who was hit should move away from his/her pile before resuming normal healing/damage. If a ranged player was targeted, he or she should move somewhere that will not impact the rest of the ranged pile’s movement in reaction to Fabulous Flames casts. If the Fabulous Flame zone has not yet appeared, just move a few steps in the opposite direction as the pile will be moving. If it has appeared, then strafe away from the boss as you take those steps, so that you skirt the edge of the existing Fabulous Flames zone. This caution is because someone with Engulfing Magic can still be chosen as the target of Fabulous Flames; you don’t want to cut off your pile’s path, or get close enough to melee that the zone ends up limiting their usable space. Once in a safe position, the debuffed player can just continue his/her normal duties until the debuff fades, and then quickly rejoin the proper raid pile.

This pattern of ranged movement will continue with each Fabulous Flames cast. The second Engulfing Magic debuff will go out ~10 seconds after the first one fades off of its victim, and whoever is targeted should react in the same way as the first victim did.

Around the time the second Engulfing Magic debuff fades, Valiona will begin her series of Twilight Flames casts. Have someone reliable assigned to watching her movements, and calling out to the raid which 1/3rd of the room will be hit by each line of fire.

-If anyone is hit by one of the early Twilight Flames streaks and shifted into the Twilight Realm, they will need to remember to listen for the call about subsequent casts, and move so that they aren’t 1-shot by fire they can’t see. While moving, or after the Twilight Flames have ended, the player(s) shifted into the Twilight should look around and find one of the pink clickable portals, run to it while avoiding the floating Unstable Twilight orbs, and click it to return to the normal realm.

After she finishes all three Twilight Flames casts, Valiona will come back to the ground while Theralion flies back up into the air.

At this point the fight basically resets from the beginning, with the same raid positioning and series of events. Valiona and Theralion will continue to swap places roughly every minute and thirty seconds, until either they are killed or 10 minutes have gone by. After 10 minutes, they will berserk and wipe your raid.

For Valiona people were having trouble spreading out should be more like this:

For Theralion I think we should try a different strategy:

Everyone stacks on her tail and when you see her spin towards the raid everyone moves forward right away avoiding the void zone. This should prevent a great deal of raid damage. Red dot is the Engulfing magic person.
